About the Founder


The founder of OceansCoast Digital, Michael Smith, became involved with the internet in the late 70’s while working with NASA and the DARPA agency. He is a 36 year business technologist. He was with USAA as Executive Director, of E-Business and before this Director, Internet Strategy and operations for SAP North America. Prior to this he was responsible for global internet strategy and operations at BMC Software. While at BMC he lead all aspects of bmc.com, and during this time founded and served as executive director for www.enterpriseleadership.org a community & broadcasting site focused on technology thought leadership.

While at Motorola, he worked in the areas of technology planning, digital intellectual property strategy, global brand marketing, and held several global product line management and market development positions. He served as global internet director in the corporate brand office. He spent several years at Dell Computer Corporation as Director of Network Systems and Technology. This was preceded by a six-year career at Zenith Corporation where he built the network systems P&L division and was responsible for product development, sales, marketing, and service.

Early in his career he spent two years as a senior consultant with Coopers & Lybrand consulting organization. He was at Texas Instruments for 10 years and did work with NASA, the defense department, and other government and commercial companies in the area of network technology, human visualization, artificial intelligence, expert systems, and knowledge management. While at Texas Instruments, he held positions in sales, product marketing, and strategic technology management.
